NATURE ACTIVITIES BENEFIT ALZHEIMER'S

Maintaining contact with nature promotes physical and emotional well being in those with Alzheimer's disease, while improving some of the symptoms of the illness, says a recent study in the Journal of Gerontological Nursing.

The study found that elders with AD or other dementias who regularly engage in activities like gardening, walking and interacting with animals experience:
~ Improved attention and comprehension
~ Less agitation
~ Fewer aggressive behaviors
~ Reduced need for sedatives
~ Fewer falls
~ Better sleep
~ More positive emotions
~ Improved social skills
How can this be explained? The study's author, Ann Bossen of University of Iowa College of Nursing, says that nature-based activities provide a wealth of opportunities for multi sensory stimulation, which is well known to be therapeutic for AD patients.
In addition these activities offer important opportunities for exercise, encounters with other people, and increased exposure to sunlight and fresh air - all of which contribute to a good quality of life.
EVEN SEVERELY AFFECTED PEOPLE RESPOND
What if people have severe AD? Some won't be able to engage in activities like gardening, even walking, if they are also very frail. Consider alternatives. Sit outside on a bench to look at flowers and listen to birds singing. If even this is not possible, try watching birds, trees or clouds through a window.
Bossen concludes, "By making available a window with a view or a breath of fresh air, we can provide chance to restore and renew, as well as an opportunity for people with dementia to enhance their dignity and their quality of life."
TIPS FOR SAFE AND EFFECTIVE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Check that your garden areas or patios have even surfaces and a shaded resting space. Have drinking water handy. Be sensitive to extremes in the weather. Don't go out when it is cold or very hot. Protect your loved one from too much exposure to sunlight with a hat, sunglasses, sun cream and adequate clothing. Of course be sure that your loved one is closely supervised at all times.
