Disaster Preparedness
On May 24th, we had Jerry Tabbott visit our Senior
Center and talk with the seniors about disaster preparedness. Other sites had
visits as well during the month of May.
Whatever your
circumstances, each family or household
needs to have a plan to protect itself during disaster. This plan should include
what you will do and where you will go in case of evacuation. As
part of your plan, organize a disaster
Many senior adults have specific medical needs that must be considered. Make sure to have a list of all your medications, a generous supply to hold you over, and a plan for refilling prescriptions as needed. To create your own disaster preparedness kit you can look in the front of the phone book for guidelines or for those who attended our events, each person received an issue of Disaster Preparedness Guide for Elders, with all the info you will need for disaster preparedness.
Many different type of disasters can force people from their homes, and proper and timely evacuation can be the difference between life and death. We should not ignore emergency officials when a warning to evacuate is issued.
As part of your notebook be sure to have your name, address, phone number, and social security number. Also, on the same sheet, list the evacuation zone you are in: A, B, C, D, E or none (you can find this in your telephone book or County Hurricane Guide or click HERE ). at the front part of your notebook, put a last minute checklist of things you need to do when you first hear that a disaster is headed your way.
Another thing to consider is that if you are required to evacuate there are precautions to take upon returning home.
If there is a disaster and any senior needs assistance, please call us here at the Council on Aging. Our phone number is 769-3468.
