As a resident of Florida, you know our state can be affected by a wide range of natural disasters. Hurricanes are the most visible example, but in the last few years Floridians have also conteded with tornadoes, floods, freezes and wildfires.
There is no substitute for being prepared, since most natural disasters give little advance warning before disrupting our daily lives. Seniors have a unique set of challenges in responding to natural disasters.
Everyone should establish a plan for protection during a disaster. Have supplies on hand to sustain you for three to seven days and be sure to include all necessary medications. It is especially helpful to have a portable National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radio, which will receive National Weather Service warnings and forecasts 24 hours a day. These radios can still function if the electricity goes out.
June 9th is Disaster Preparedness Day at all Bay County Council on Aging mealsites. Come to the program and learn how you can be prepared for any natural disaster. Be sure to pick up the "Disaster Preparedness Guide for Elders", published by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, while you are there.
