February 2012

Memo from the Meal Site...

The Bay County Council on Aging's Nutrition Advisory Council will meet in February. As you know, our representatives are June Adams, who serves as Chairperson, Freddie Parham, who is Vice Chairperson, Frances Goodin and Gladys Moore who are our Alternates. With the new year, our site will be voting on new Representatives (or perhaps the same) and an election of new chairpersons will take place. The Council is composed of representatives from each site.

Look in our March newsletter to see the results of the election and who will be representing our site for 2012.

Debbie's Digest......

Are you feeling sluggish? Exercise is the source of making your body feel better. Chair Aerobics, Zumba for Seniors, Tai Chi, Line Dancing or just walking will make a difference, along with plenty of Vitamin D, which is needed for strong bones, healthy immune systems and heart disease prevention. Stretching increases blood circulation and enhances muscular coordination. Exercise is considered a natural stress reliever. It has been said that you can make yourself appear younger with a simple smile, so try this and see how it works. There is someone around you who needs a smile. Take time for yourself, whether it is reading a good book, meditation or deep breathing exercises. Relax and enjoy life everyday!

Note from Sandy

January brought some very cold days and February is known to have its share as well. With lower temperatures, come higher electric bills. Remember, if you meet the criteria, you may be eligible for once a year assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). the amount of assistance is based on the number of people in the household and income level. Applications are available here or you may call 769-3468 to make an appointment for assistance.

Don't miss our Valentine/Mardi Gras Party on February 9th. Some may come in Mardi Gras attire while others may dress in red and white. It's up to you. We will have a great time with George Arthur singing. Come early to get a good seat.

Since this is Leap Year, we are having a very special Topsy Turvy Day on February 29th. What a party it will be. Upside down, inside out, crazy! Danny will be here singing and we are going to get dancing crazy. Ladies, bring that ring and ask your fella to marry you - but remember, he has the right to say no.

Don't confuse Leap Day with Sadie Hawkins Day, which is rooted in the story of Sadie Hawkins, a character created by Al Capp in the comic strip Li'l Abner.  Sadie was unable to get a date; so her father, a prominent citizen in the town of Dogpatch, named a day after her to help Sadie get a man. On Sadie Hawkins Day, a footrace was held in Dogpatch so the women could pursue the town's eligible bachelors. Outside the comic strip, the practical  basis of Sadie Hawkins Day is one of simple gender role reversal. Women and girls take the bold initiative by inviting the man or boy of their choice out on a date - almost unheard of before 1937 - typically to a dance attended by other bachelors and their assertive dates. Due to its enormous popularity and the numerous fan letters he received, Capp obligingly made it a tradition in the strip every November, lasting four decades. But...this is Leap Year, the year for proposals! Annie Get Your Gun!
